The Peak City Book Festival is fully funded by authors, businesses and organizations.  And, every week brings new sponsors which are posted to Facebook, Pinterest and the web-site.  

Today, we are spotlighting Life Protection Skills of Apex for their generous sponsorship and program: Life Saving Skills for the young and old.

The Apex Ki Do Kwan is a family owned and operated modern self-protection school that instructs individuals of all ages and abilities in skills to help keep safer and stronger. Their staff combines over 50 years of martial arts experience with practical experience in law enforcement and weapons training to provide the best possible curriculum. The Ki Do Kwan is unique in so many ways. There are no contracts, enrollment fees or testing fees. Belt ranks are earned through dedication and training and outreach extends to all persons interested in self-protection skills, regardless of their interest in long-term training.

Program for the Peak City Book Festival

Imagine the following:  You come into your classroom at school and your teacher has fallen and has been injured. She cannot communicate with you. What do you do?  The Life Protection Skills Demonstration Team will present a scenario-based 'story' teaching you what to do in such an emergency.  You will learn how the 911 system works, how to get others to assist you, how police and EMS respond and how to make a bad situation better for every one. This is important for your Life Protection Skills!  You will also see some cool martial arts thrown in at the end to highlight what else we do at the Life Protection Skills Training Center.

Join us for a presentation by the Apex, NC based Martial Arts Training Center at the #PeakCityBookFestival for Life Protection Skills Workshop.  Get hands-on experience and build your knowledge to write in life-saving scenes from an expert.

It Doesn't Take Sight to Believe

What Michael Sees is a documentary about young Michael Macias, a fourteen year old music prodigy. He plays piano with his heart but cannot see what he plays.  A remarkable story about a young man, who lost his sight at 14 months due to Retinopathy of Prematurity.  Despite his blindness and other physical challenges associated with such an early birth, he has an indomitable spirit. 

The documentary is being produced by Brian Barnette, author of Stone Upon Stone, In the End, It's a Love Story (Peak City Publishing, LLC, 2011).  Brian has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to put this story on film.

All Booked Up, owned by Janice Monaco of Apex, NC, is considered a staple in the historic downtown shopping area. Reminiscent of old Mayberry in the Andy Griffith Show, Apex is considered a bustling destination spot for Raleigh/Durham residents.

The store front, originating around 1863, was once home to Popes Five and Dime, a town mainstay. Today, All Booked Up is not only the last independent book store in and around Apex, it is THE place to find books by local authors and illustrators. In June, the local publishing company, Peak City Publishing, moved in to the space to provide a place for writers and artists to share their stories, take classes and promote books. Ms. Monaco said, "We are strong supporters of our local community and anything we can do to help authors get their books visibility is a priority for us."

The book store, dubbed A Unique Book Boutique is certainly that! Taking a tour of the 1800 SQ FT store,

it is clear that the customer's comfort, the quality of books and the overall experience is the owner's priority. Upon entering, customer's are welcomed into a large front room with book shelves and displays placed along the walls. Similar to walking into an old home, the space is tastefully decorated with art, furniture and, of course, books.

The Kids Corner is beautifully set in a separate room with shelves, wall pockets and books for readers of all ages. Every Wednesday, children attend a Story Time event, complete with reading and activities. 

And, the young adult section which stretches along the walls just outside of the children's room is one of the most visited and popular places to browse, read and buy the latest books. The young adults of Apex run to All Booked Up for all of their classics and required reading.

The book selection, from Mystery to Romance and the genre's in between, is of the highest quality for used books. Ms. Monaco has put strict, quality standards on all books brought into the store. A customer will never find a ripped cover, stained page or poorly handled book for sale in this store.

APEX, N.C. (August 1, 2011) –

recipient of three regional Emmy® nominations for Set Design, Music and Writing,

winner of a Silver Telly Award and a Bronze People’s Choice Telly Award for

Children’s programming, along with The Halle Cultural Arts Center and The Rusty

Bucket store, all located in historic downtown Apex, proudly present an encore

presentation of the pilot episode, “Lincoln, Journey to 16,” on Tuesday, August 16, at

7:00 PM. The Dove Foundation has given the pilot episode its highest approval for allage

family viewing.

Come join cast and crew members, show producers and the owners of The Rusty Bucket

store, Pam and Mack Thorpe, and hear the latest news about the production. There might

even be a few copies of the August 2011 edition of

TRBK TV show is produced in Apex, New Hill and at the New Hope Valley Railway in

Bonsal. The show also travels to locations where some of its historical characters

actually lived. TRBK satisfies a growing need for quality, family-friendly programming.

In spring of 2009, the Association of National Advertisers’ Alliance conducted a critical

research effort, which supports this push for family entertainment. The research was

designed to better understand what consumers are seeking in family-friendly TV, as well

as the impact of programming on the efficacy of advertising. The most important finding

was the clear desire for more options when it comes to quality entertainment for the

family. In fact, only 23% of respondents reported being satisfied with the amount of

family-oriented programming currently available. In addition, in another study conducted

jointly between Wal-Mart and Procter & Gamble (P&G), 85% of respondents said they

would go out of their way to “find and watch quality, family-friendly programming.”

The Rusty Bucket Kids live in the small, southern town of Peak City, played by the Town

of Apex. Roxanna Demers, age 13, who is home-schooled, portrays Roxanna Peakssen,

and JohnColeman Demers, age 10, plays JohnColeman Peakssen. The siblings travel

back in time on Steamy, played by The New Hope Valley Railway Steam Locomotive

No. 17 and Caboose No. 308. Roxanna and JohnColeman visit famous people of

American history, who are still in their teenage years.

The First Line, Book 2, Cover Art

I am very excited to share the cover art for the second edition of The First Line. The First Line is a free writing contest, sponsored by All Booked Up and Peak City Publishing for young adults. Winning submissions are published in an anthology of short stories and available for sale on Amazon, through All Booked Up and the Peak City Publishing web site.

Book Two, based on the first line: "It was cute until" will feature cover art by Derrick M Eason. Laura Grace Wright, a high school student from Apex, NC, conveyed her vision of the book cover based on the winning manuscript: "When It's Over".

Have You 'Googled' Yourself Lately?

Sounds a little dirty, but it’s really an inexpensive and powerful way to see what others are reading about you, if they’re reading anything at all.  How often have you met someone and later looked them up on Google?

As an author, it is important that your name is associated with the image and reputation you want them to remember.  Your readers, editors, and reviewers will make decisions on what they see and read online, which will in turn, translate into: 

• Is this person legit? 
• What is this person into?
• Where is this person listed?  
• Should I buy/read/censor (grin) his/her book?

When I first ‘Googled’ Bob Crowley, author of the upcoming Peak City Publishing release of “The Wanderer of New Hope,” I came across the winner of the 2008 Survivor- Gabon show, who goes by the same name.  Then, another:  a theatre director, scenic and costume designer in Ireland, and even more interesting, Robert Trumbull Crowley,  the former Assistant Deputy Director of Clandestine Operations of the CIA who is the subject of another book, about the conspiracy to “force” John F Kennedy from the Presidency.  

So, What about Bob?

Well, searching by RT Crowley, we find our Bob!  He is, at a glance,:

Donna Washington, Local Celebrity and Award Winning Children's Book Author
